Tragedy struck in Oyo State when a passenger bus fell into the Ariyo River along Amuloko Road in Ibadan, resulting in three fatalities and five survivors being rescued by the Oyo State Fire Services Agency.
The agency's Chairman, Mr. Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the unfortunate event in a statement released to the media on Thursday, March 12, 2026.
According to Akinwande, the agency received an emergency call regarding the incident from Mrs. Fadeke Yusuf on Wednesday, prompting immediate deployment of personnel to the site.
"Upon arrival, we found a Suzuki bus with registration number LEW 484 XA (Osun) carrying eight passengers that lost control and plunged into the river," he recounted.
He further noted, "Five individuals were saved and transported to Ona-Ara Private Hospital in the Jegede area, while the three deceased were retrieved and handed over to a police team from the Ogbere Divisional Headquarters led by ASP Aishat Ibrahim."
Akinwande attributed the cause of the crash to careless driving and urged motorists to adhere strictly to road safety regulations to prevent such incidents in the future.
He also expressed gratitude to the Oyo State Road Transport Management Agency, the Ona Ara Division, and the local government chairman, Glorious Temitope, for their assistance during the rescue efforts.
