David Bird, the Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Refinery, has expressed immense pride in overseeing what he considers the "most modern, most automated, and most energy-efficient refinery in the world."
During a statement made at the refinery on Wednesday, Bird characterized the project as a fantastic "continent-building initiative" that offers him substantial personal fulfillment, emphasizing its scale and ambitious nature as Africa's most significant industrial investment.
He shared, "To refer to this as a continent-building project is no exaggeration, and I derive substantial personal purpose from being involved in this remarkable venture. While I joined in August, I cannot take credit for the remarkable commissioning and operational launch that have already occurred."
Bird expressed gratitude for the achievements made thus far, stating, "I often say, 'I stand on the shoulders of giants,' acknowledging the transformation that has taken place in this part of Lagos, Nigeria—a region poised to evolve into a global industrial hub."
He also pointed out the refinery’s transition towards stabilization and increased capacity. In the latter half of 2025, the facility managed to produce over 50 million liters of products daily, sometimes even surpassing 52 million liters, despite ongoing capacity enhancements in both conversion and downstream units.
Bird commended the plant's distinctive design and the strategic vision of Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the founder of Dangote Group, for this productivity.
"Currently, we are in a phase focused on stabilization. It brings me immense pride that even while we are still ramping up our conversion and downstream capabilities, we maintained a daily output of 50 million liters, reaching over 52 million liters at times," he stated.
He elaborated on the refinery's innovative nature, emphasizing, "Dangote Refinery is not merely an ordinary facility. We are fortunate to have Alhaji Aliko Dangote's foresight in investing in the kind of infrastructure that enables us to truly leverage this site as a comprehensive merchant refining blending trading hub. In practical terms, this means 100% of our feed stock is sourced via maritime transport. Unlike other refineries tied to a pipeline and processing a single crude type, our feedstock is entirely ocean-borne. This provides us with remarkable versatility in the crude we refine, allowing for a diverse selection of Nigerian grades, as well as the opportunity to utilize alternative grades and intermediate feed stocks, greatly optimizing our conversion units.
