Chelsea FC has decided to suspend their midfielder, Enzo Fernandez, for the club's next two matches following his recent statements regarding a potential transfer to Real Madrid. The Argentine international's comments, made during the recent international break, have led to this disciplinary action from the Stamford Bridge club.
As a consequence of his remarks, Fernandez will be unavailable for Chelsea's FA Cup quarter-final tie scheduled for Saturday against Port Vale. He will also miss the subsequent Premier League fixture against Manchester City, which is set to take place next Sunday.
Club official Liam Rosenior addressed the situation, stating that while the player's frustration stems from a desire for team success, his public comments about joining a rival club were deemed unacceptable. Rosenior indicated that the decision to sanction Fernandez was a collective one, involving the ownership and the playing squad, aimed at safeguarding the club's established culture.
Rosenior emphasized that this suspension is not a permanent exclusion, describing it as a "sanction" to reinforce boundaries. He expressed confidence in Fernandez's character and abilities, noting that "a line was crossed" that required a response to protect the team's ethos.
In a related matter, Rosenior confirmed that Marc Cucurella would not face disciplinary action for his criticism of the club's transfer strategy and comments regarding manager Enzo Maresca's departure. Rosenior mentioned a productive conversation with Cucurella, who he believes is fully committed to Chelsea.
Since Liam Rosenior took the managerial helm in January, Chelsea has achieved ten victories in nineteen games, with seven losses and two draws. The team currently occupies sixth place in the Premier League standings, trailing fourth-placed Aston Villa by six points in the pursuit of a Champions League qualification spot.
