Chloe Kim and Eileen Gu, two prominent figures set to shine at the 2026 Winter Olympics, have responded to remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump labeling freestyle skier Hunter Hess as a 'real loser' after Hess discussed his ambivalence about competing for the U.S. amid ongoing political strains.
During a press event on Monday, February 9, both athletes expressed the necessity of unity and kindness in sports.
"We need to lead with love and compassion. I’d like to see more of that," stated Kim, who is striving for her third consecutive gold medal in the Olympic halfpipe. She shared her personal connection to the issue, remarking, "Obviously, my parents being immigrants makes this particularly resonate with me."
Gu, a two-time Olympic champion, also commented on the detrimental effect of politics casting a shadow over the Olympics. "It's unfortunate that the news overshadowing the Olympics revolves around issues so distant from the essence of the Games. It truly contradicts everything the Olympics should represent," said Gu, who recently achieved her fourth Olympic medal by securing silver in the freeski slopestyle.
"Having been caught in political crossfire previously, I feel for my fellow athletes. I sincerely hope they can perform at their best," Gu added.
Joining them were three other U.S. snowboarders, including Maddie Mastro, who expressed pride in representing Team USA despite feeling disheartened by the current state of affairs, emphasizing their commitment to kindness and solidarity during challenging times.
Bea Kim, 19, underscored the advantages athletes enjoy in the U.S., stating, "Diversity is our strength. We are examples of how we can pursue our dreams here."
Maddy Schaffrick, participating in her first Olympics at 31, remarked, "The Games embody the coming together of nations and cultures in friendly rivalry. I’m honored to compete for the U.S. while proudly displaying my nation’s flag."
Hess, scheduled to compete in the men's freeski halfpipe on February 19, previously indicated that representing the U.S. brings about mixed feelings but he remains proud to symbolize the positive values of his country and the support of his loved ones. Trump's remarks, posted on Truth Social, attracted significant public attention, yet the athletes conveyed that sports should serve to unite rather than divide.
