A Federal High Court located in Abuja has annulled the executive committee led by Julius Abure of the Labour Party, alongside the candidates selected under their leadership for electoral purposes.
Judge Peter Lifu announced on Wednesday that the executive directed by Senator Nenadi Usman is the legitimate governing body of the party.
As a direct consequence, the court has instructed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately acknowledge the caretaker committee led by Usman as "the sole valid authority representing the Labour Party," until the party convenes its national convention.
This judgment stemmed from a legal case identified as THC/ABJ/CS/2262/2025, initiated by the former minister in the court.
The judge reinforced the decision made by the Supreme Court on April 4, 2024, which had nullified the Abure administration.
While refuting Abure’s argument that the issue constituted an internal affair of a political party and was therefore non-justiciable, the court maintained that the formation of the LP caretaker committee was deemed "essential" following the Supreme Court's order.
It is important to recall that due to a leadership crisis affecting the LP, the National Executive Committee (NEC) voted to depose Abure as National Chairman.
To address the leadership gap, the party established a caretaker committee comprised of 29 members, with the former Finance Minister Usman appointed as the chairman.
