In a recent announcement, the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) has extended the individual income tax filing deadline for the year 2026. Instead of the usual March 31 cutoff, taxpayers now have until April 14, 2026, to submit their annual tax returns.

Dr. Ayodele Subair, the Executive Chairman of LIRS, explained that this extension is designed to give taxpayers “additional time to complete and submit accurate tax returns.” He emphasized that even though the statutory filing deadline is typically the end of March, this two-week grace period is intended to alleviate last-minute rush anxieties.

Moreover, Dr. Subair reiterated the importance of adhering to electronic filing, stating that the LIRS eTax platform is the only approved method for submitting annual tax returns. Manual submissions will no longer be accepted. He described the platform as secure and user-friendly, accessible around the clock, and urged taxpayers to ensure their Tax Identification Numbers (TaxIDs) are correctly entered in their filings.

The memorandum confirming this extension, signed by Monsurat Amasa-Oyelude, Head of Corporate Communications at LIRS, assures taxpayers that the eTax portal is fully operational and available for use at https://etax.lirs.net.

To assist residents in taking advantage of this extension, here is a concise three-step guide for filing:

1\. Gather Your Documents: Have your Tax Identification Number and total income records for 2025 ready. Employees should also obtain their H1/Form A details from their HR departments.

2\. Access the eTax Portal: Visit https://etax.lirs.net. Since this platform is now the sole filing method, it is designed to be intuitive. Utilize the “Forgot Password” feature if you need to reset your login credentials.

3\. Complete and Submit Your Filing: Follow the necessary prompts to enter your income details and relevant allowances. Ensure your TaxID is accurate, as advised by Dr. Subair, to prevent any issues. After submission, you will receive a digital confirmation—be sure to save this confirmation as it indicates your filing is completed for the year.

This announcement alleviates the common stress associated with tax season and encourages residents to integrate compliance into their routine practices.
