Wilfred Ndidi, the captain of the Super Eagles, is grieving the loss of his father, Sunday Ndidi, following a road accident.
The unfortunate incident, which involved a retired military officer, occurred on Tuesday in Delta State.
The accident took place in Umunede, where Sunday Ndidi was transported to a hospital in Agbor, where he was later pronounced dead.
His football club, Besiktas, conveyed the tragic news in an official statement released on Tuesday.
"We are profoundly saddened to learn about the untimely demise of our player Wilfred Ndidi’s father, Sunday Ndidi, in a tragic traffic accident," the club stated.
They further expressed their condolences, saying, "May Allah have mercy on the deceased; our thoughts are with Wilfred Ndidi, his family, and all loved ones during this time."
This incident follows closely on the heels of Wilfred Ndidi’s outstanding performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where he led Nigeria to a third-place finish and scored his first international goal for the Super Eagles.
During the tournament, Ndidi honored his father with a heartfelt tribute in celebration of a header goal he scored against Tunisia in Nigeria’s second group match.
"The celebration was dedicated to my father as he often spoke of Kanu Nwankwo," Ndidi recounted to journalists in Morocco.
"I remembered a video from the past, which came to my mind, and I decided to celebrate it for my dad."
Ndidi has frequently remarked on the strong bond he shared with his father, who raised him within military barracks. The midfielder, a Lagos native, attributes his disciplined upbringing to the values instilled in him by his father, greatly influencing his football journey.
As tributes from fans and the broader football community continue to flow in, Ndidi has not yet released a public statement regarding the loss of his father.
