Defence Minister Musa Advocates Integrity and Commitment in Nation-Building

The Defence Minister, General Christopher Musa, expressed that the process of nation-building demands integrity, accountability, and commitment from every citizen, asserting that collective responsibility is essential for sustainable development and national stability.

He urged that each citizen plays a crucial role in maintaining ethical standards, assisting government initiatives, and fostering unity throughout the nation.

General Musa made these statements during the Combined Convocation Ceremony of the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) in Kaduna on Saturday, 28 March 2026, as reported by the Director of Public Relations and Information of the Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame.

Represented by the Ministry of Defence's Permanent Secretary, Mr. Richard Pheelangwah, General Musa encouraged the graduates to embrace patriotism, innovation, and excellence as they aim to contribute positively to the development of the nation.

He highlighted that the academic achievements of the graduates carry the responsibility of contributing to the country's growth and security.

In an update on the significance of the occasion, the Minister noted that 3,003 students received diplomas, degrees, and certificates, marking an impressive milestone for AFIT, especially since the institution became degree- awarding in the 2018/2019 academic year.

He emphasized that the graduates should not only leave with academic qualifications but also as stewards of national responsibility, equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to tackle contemporary challenges.

Charging them to apply their expertise with strong ethical principles, Musa stressed that Nigeria's advancement hinges on individuals dedicated to integrity and accountability.

In related news, Hon. Dewan Gabriel, a former speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, condemned recent remarks by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Olufemi Oluyede, labeling them as disrespectful to families affected by terrorism.

The CDS had compared terrorists to the biblical “prodigal son,” implying they deserved rehabilitation. This comparison sparked significant outrage from communities affected by violence and security officials.

Gabriel criticized the comments, underlining that they were inappropriate in light of the ongoing killings, displacements, and insecurity faced by Nigerians.

He noted that such remarks belittle the pain and suffering endured by innocent citizens and send a troubling message that the welfare of victims is secondary to that of offenders. Gabriel insisted that terrorists should not be viewed as “misunderstood individuals” but as aggressors in a violent campaign against the Nigerian state, contending that sympathy for them undermines public trust.

He further stated that these comments tarnish national morale and disrespect the sacrifices made by security personnel, who have risked their lives in combating terrorism.

“Leadership at that level demands sensitivity, discipline, and a steadfast commitment to justice. When a senior official makes remarks that weaken the resolve against terrorism, it raises serious doubts about their judgment and suitability for the position,” Gabriel asserted.

In another update, CDS Oluyede has stressed the necessity of maintaining physical, mental, and emotional well-being for operational effectiveness in the face of ongoing threats.

“To overcome insurgency and other rising security challenges, personnel must ensure they remain fit both physically and mentally,” he stated.

He remarked that Nigeria's complex security landscape requires personnel who are combat-ready, resilient, disciplined, and able to confront security challenges with determination.

During the concluding ceremony of the CDS Armed Forces Inter-Service Archery Competition 2026, he noted that amidst the country's security issues, the event was timely and vital for addressing threats through non-military strategies.

Represented by Rear Admiral Semiu Adekpegba, Director of Defence Administration, the CDS emphasized the importance of Armed Forces personnel being physically, mentally, and emotionally resilient to meet the significant responsibilities and aspirations of the nation.
