An official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ogun State, Abass Olalekan, was re-arraigned on Monday before a Magistrate’s Court located in Abeokuta. He faces a four-count charge, including the alleged murder of corps member Victoria Ariyo.

Victoria Ariyo, who was 23 years old and serving in Abeokuta, died two weeks ago, reportedly due to complications arising from an abortion procedure.

According to reports, Ariyo was in a romantic relationship with Olalekan and became pregnant before her tragic demise during the termination of the pregnancy.

Olalekan, who serves as the Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South Local Government Area, was initially arrested and charged in the previous week with conspiracy and attempt to procure an abortion.

During the court proceedings, presided over by Magistrate A.K. Araba, he was granted bail set at N500,000, along with other conditions.

However, the situation changed significantly during Monday’s hearing when Olalekan was re-arraigned, with the charges now including murder.

Solomon Babalola, representing the police, requested the court to remand the defendant for an additional 60 days at the Oba Correctional Centre while awaiting guidance from the state Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

Magistrate O.T. Odubanjo approved the request, ordering that the defendant be held at the Oba Correctional Centre as the court awaits legal advice from the DPP.

The hearing for the case has been adjourned to June 1st for further proceedings.
