Following the death of Reverend Jesse Jackson, President Donald Trump took to Truth Social to pay homage but also to reflect on his relationship with Jackson and offer pointed remarks about former President Barack Obama.
In his post, Trump detailed how he had aided Jackson throughout the years. He noted that he had provided office space in one of his properties, addressed Jackson's requests related to criminal justice reforms, and pledged funding for historically Black colleges and universities, adding that he did all this despite being labeled a 'Racist' unjustly.
Moreover, Trump referenced Jackson's impact on Obama’s election, stating, 'He had much to do with the election, without acknowledgment or credit, of Barack Hussein Obama, a man who Jesse could not stand.'
The relationship between Jackson and Obama had come under scrutiny during Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, notably when Jackson was recorded expressing a desire to 'cut Obama's nuts off' and accusing him of being patronizing towards Black Americans.
Jackson later expressed remorse over those comments, explaining to Chris Cuomo, 'I’m a long-standing supporter [of Obama], and due to my dedication to what he stands for along with the campaign, I swiftly apologized for any offense or any harm.'
Despite the backlash during that period, Jackson was recognized as a pioneering figure, with his own presidential bids in 1984 and 1988 paving the way for future African American candidates. He displayed visible joy when Obama was elected and both share deep political roots in Chicago.
Jesse Jackson passed away peacefully at the age of 84, surrounded by family on Tuesday.
