Dr. Craig Slapinski, the Clinical Director and Co-founder of the Spine Nerve Center in Nigeria and Ghana, highlights that millions around the globe suffer from chronic back and neck pain, and surgery is not necessarily the optimal remedy.
In an interview on ARISE News on Monday, Dr. Slapinski discussed the potential hazards associated with surgical interventions as well as the advantages of opting for non-surgical treatments.
He stated, "Surgery is very rarely the most suitable option for individuals enduring chronic and intense back pain. There are numerous risks linked to such procedures, and most surgical outcomes tend to last only about seven years."
The clinician noted that a prevalent cause of chronic pain originates from the intervertebral discs that cushion the spine. "With time, these cushions deteriorate, leading to increased pressure on the nerves and resulting in pain," he elaborated.
Dr. Slapinski also pointed out lifestyle elements contributing to spinal issues. He remarked, "Prolonged sitting, improper lifting, and extended driving periods significantly contribute to the deterioration of spinal discs."
At the center, conditions such as sciatica and peripheral neuropathy are managed. He defined sciatica as a condition resulting from problems with the lower back discs, while peripheral neuropathy, often affecting diabetics, can manifest as persistent burning sensations.
Dr. Slapinski affirmed that the non-surgical treatments provided at their facility yield remarkable results. "We gently separate the vertebrae to alleviate pressure on the nerves. Additionally, we implement exercises, electrical therapy, and cold laser therapy in our treatments."
He also warned against an overdependence on medication. "Pain serves a purpose. Ignoring that signal can exacerbate the damage to the spine."
The clinic has recently opened in Lagos, affirming to provide care of the same quality as its Abuja and US branches. "Our standard of care in Nigeria parallels that which we offer in the United States,"
he stated.
Patients with persistent sciatica or back pain are encouraged to arrange an evaluation. "If these symptoms continue, it's essential to consult a professional, so please reach out to our office," he advised.
