Dr. Sandra Lee, widely recognized as "Dr. Pimple Popper," has revealed that she experienced a stroke while in the process of filming her popular reality series. The 55-year-old dermatologist recounted that the health scare happened in November during the production of "Dr. Pimple Popper: Breaking Out."
She first began to feel unwell with symptoms she initially mistook for a hot flash. These included unusual sweating, restlessness, and sharp pains in one of her legs. Dr. Lee also found herself having difficulty with simple tasks, such as navigating stairs.
The situation escalated significantly the following day. Dr. Lee reported noticing weakness in her hand and encountered challenges with clear speech and formulating words, prompting her to consider the possibility of a stroke.
Following her father's urgent advice to seek immediate medical attention, she was transported to the hospital. Subsequent medical assessments, including an MRI, confirmed that she had sustained an ischemic stroke, a condition caused by a blood vessel blockage that restricts blood flow to a portion of the brain.
Dr. Lee described the experience as difficult to come to terms with, even as a medical professional. She noted that the stroke affected a specific area of her brain, resulting in persistent after-effects.
She admitted that she continues to face difficulties with her speech and has not regained full strength or control over her left hand. Emotionally, the experience has been challenging, particularly given the professional demands placed upon a surgeon.
Dr. Lee attributed the stroke to a combination of unmanaged health issues, including elevated blood pressure, high cholesterol, and significant stress stemming from her professional work and the demands of filming.
Despite the severity of the event, she stated that it has served as a crucial wake-up call, compelling her to prioritize her health more diligently.
The dramatic moment was captured and featured in the show's trailer, which showed emergency services arriving on set during filming.
Dr. Lee, who built a substantial global audience through her online skincare content before venturing into television, is currently focused on her recovery while continuing her professional activities.
