A 16-year-old girl, victim of sexual abuse by her grandfather Musa Gado, has welcomed a baby boy in Niger State.

The child's paternity was verified through a DNA test conducted by authorities.

Following her pregnancy, Gado allegedly urged the girl to terminate it. Despite her attempt to end the pregnancy through medication and injections, her efforts were unsuccessful.

The adolescent girl ultimately sought help from the Child Rights Protection and Enforcement Agency and was placed in protective custody until she gave birth to her son.

Barrister Uma Mohammed, the agency's Director-General, confirmed this incident, stating that both the mother and her baby remain under the agency's care.

"We are addressing the case of a 16-year-old girl who was sexually assaulted by her grandfather. This situation was reported to us on October 5, 2025, by the girl's father, Lawali Baba, along with the community leader, Mai Angwa," she noted.

Mohammed elaborated that upon reporting, the girl revealed she was six months pregnant. Medical evaluations were performed, and she was admitted to a hospital for care. Since then, she has been in the agency's custody to ensure her safety and that of her unborn child.

"There were attempts to terminate the pregnancy. Our priority is the protection of the child, which is our utmost concern. She remained with us until delivery in December 2025. We coordinated with all parties, including the alleged perpetrator, to conduct a DNA test to ascertain the truth, to which everyone agreed," Mohammed explained.

The accused grandfather financed the DNA test, costing N500,000, which was carried out at a medical facility in Gwagwalada.

"Following childbirth, we allowed time for both the mother and the infant to regain strength before conducting the test. It took five weeks for the results, which confirmed that the grandfather is indeed the child's father, with a probability of 99.999%. Upon receipt of the results, we have escalated the matter to law enforcement for further investigation. The suspect is currently in police custody at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and the case will go to court for prosecution," she added.

Wasiu Abiodun, the spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, confirmed the grandfather's arrest on Tuesday, indicating that investigations are ongoing regarding the case.
