One of Africa's celebrated literary masterpieces is officially heading to the cinema.
EbonyLife Films has revealed that the film adaptation of Lola Shoneyin's renowned novel, "The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives," is set for a worldwide release in December 2026.
This venture signifies EbonyLife's notable return to the film scene after a five-year period primarily focused on streaming productions. In an unprecedented collaboration, the project involves four major African media powerhouses: EbonyLife Group, Genesis Group, Nile Group, and Silverbird Group.
Discussing the significance of the project, Executive Producer Mo Abudu expressed, "I am thrilled to be making a comeback to the big screen after five years with the film adaptation of Lola Shoneyin’s internationally acclaimed narrative. The strong partnerships with Genesis, Nile, and Silverbird, coupled with our brilliant cast, demonstrate the ambition behind this effort."
The film will be directed by Daniel Oriahi, known for his work on "Sylvia" and "The Weekend." It features one of the largest ensemble casts ever assembled for a Nigerian movie, with Odunlade Adekola leading alongside Iyabo Ojo, Bimbo Ademoye, Mercy Aigbe, and Omowunmi Dada.
Additional prominent actors connected to the film include Shaffy Bello, Femi Branch, Bisola Aiyeola, Lateef Adedimeji, Kunle Remi, Daniel Etim Effiong, and Tina Mba.
For context, the narrative centers around Baba Segi, a wealthy, self-important patriarch whose carefully maintained polygamous household begins to fall apart when he marries a fourth wife, the academically inclined Bolanle. Her entry sparks rivalries and unveils long-hidden secrets that the first three wives have desperately sought to conceal.
The screenplay has been adeptly crafted by Adze Ugah, incorporating insights from Lola Shoneyin herself to ensure the film captures the nuanced humor and critical social perspectives of the 2010 novel. As noted by Moses Babatope, CEO of Nile Group, "This story merits a global audience. The level of collaboration behind this project is exceptional, and viewers from different continents can look forward to something truly remarkable this Christmas.
