The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has indicated that the drop in electricity generation across the national grid is linked to ongoing gas supply challenges impacting multiple thermal power stations.

In its latest report, NISO noted that as of 05:00 hours on Thursday, 5th March 2026, total generation on the grid was recorded at 3,940.53 MW, which is below the expected capacity owing to current gas supply inadequacies affecting several generating units.

NISO stated, "Between 06:00 and 08:00 hours, numerous generating units were compelled to cease operations due to insufficient gas supply. This circumstance led to a combined reduction of approximately 292 MW in the generation available on the grid during that time."

Additionally, operational data from 4th March 2026 revealed that thermal power plants require around 1,588.61 million standard cubic feet (MMSCF) of gas daily to function at their full potential.

However, the actual gas supply to these facilities was merely about 652.92 MMSCF, accounting for roughly 40% of the gas necessary for peak generation.

NISO elaborated, "These developments have significantly curtailed the total generation capacity available for dispatch to the national grid and have aggravated the current generation shortfall experienced throughout the system."

The statement further mentioned that NISO is collaborating with the affected Generation Companies (GenCos) and relevant gas suppliers to monitor the situation closely and work towards the prompt resumption of generation as soon as gas supply stabilizes.

Concluding the statement, NISO affirmed its commitment to implementing necessary operational measures to ensure grid stability while addressing the repercussions of the reduced generation on the grid. The organization also promised to keep stakeholders and the public updated on factors impacting the national grid.
