Éric Chelle, the head coach of Nigeria's Super Eagles, has provided insights into the on-pitch disagreement that occurred between Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman during the Round of 16 game against Mozambique at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The incident has generated a lot of discussions throughout the tournament.
Chelle explained, “On the pitch, there was a discussion with Lookman. Victor mentioned, ‘We need to stop playing in front of goal.’ Things became a bit heated, leading to a minor confrontation, but it's part of what happens in competitive sports,” he shared with After Foot RMC.
After the match, Lookman was visibly upset and required some time to cool off. However, Chelle emphasized that once the tension subsided, Lookman reverted to his usual self. He assured that there was never any doubt about Osimhen participating in the upcoming quarterfinal match against Algeria. “What occurs in the locker room remains there. I didn't feel the need to step in. We returned to the hotel, they resolved their differences, and that was the end of it,” he added.
Moreover, Chelle commended both players for their professionalism and commitment.
He remarked, “In goal-scoring situations, they are exceptional. The rivalry makes sense given that both are highly driven strikers. Victor is relentless. When he misses out on his training drills or does not score in practice, it frustrates him immensely. Winning is his priority. Lookman shares a similar passion, albeit with a calmer demeanor.”
Chelle further noted, “Honestly, I have witnessed many strikers, but their proficiency in striking the ball, whether using their right or left foot, is truly remarkable.”
