Everest Uba, the Special Adviser to the Governor of Anambra State on Markets, has revealed that markets across the state are largely back in operation following the lifting of the Monday sit-at-home order.

In a recent interview with ARISE NEWS, Uba confirmed that major markets reopened on February 2 after nearly five years of closure, marking a significant economic revival for Anambra State.

"The markets in Anambra State officially opened on February 2, having been shut down for about five years. The reopening followed a visit from Mr. Governor a week prior," Uba explained.

He mentioned that government officials performed inspections at major markets, including key commercial centers, to ensure adherence to reopening directives.

"We conducted another round of checks with the Chief of Staff, the Commissioner for Information, and some members of the media to evaluate market compliance, and notably, the primary market was nearly completely operational, with about 98 percent of vendors present. Activity levels were vibrant," he stated.

Nevertheless, Uba indicated that certain markets, such as Ochanja, are still not fully compliant and noted that enforcement actions would be taken.

"Some markets have not yet fully complied, including Ochanja. The Governor has directed that if markets remain closed, we may have to seal them temporarily. Today we executed that directive," he remarked.

He pointed out that particular market areas that failed to comply have been identified for temporary closure.

"We monitored the situation and have marked several lines for shutdown," Uba remarked, asserting that penalties would be enforced for traders who do not comply with the Governor's directives.

Uba expressed confidence in the security arrangements made prior to the markets' reopening.

"Security measures are firmly in place. I can confidently state that since late 2024, citizens have been freely moving around," he noted.

He added that traders had begun informal business operations even before the official suspension of the sit-at-home order.

"During December, markets operated even on Sundays and Mondays. Following the Christmas festivities, the markets were fully functional again. This time, the Governor’s encouragement was all it took for everyone to return," he elaborated.

Uba underscored the significance of Onitsha Main Market, describing it as a vital economic center not just for Anambra, but for the broader region.

"Onitsha Main Market is the leading market in West Africa. It attracts traders from Cameroon, the North, and western Nigeria," he stated.

He reiterated the decision to reopen markets was based on confidence in the security measures implemented.

"Anambra is fully open for business now. Security has been assured. Last Monday, there were no incidents, and the same goes for today. Security measures are very effective," Uba confirmed.

He acknowledged that Governor Soludo had thoroughly prepared for this move well in advance.

"Before embarking on any actions, Mr. Governor considers all factors. Preparations began as far back as last year," he noted.

While admitting there is still some opposition, Uba attributed the challenges to a small group that aims to sabotage progress.

"There are minor economic saboteurs attempting to disrupt this initiative. That's why we are enforcing a return to normalcy for everyone," he explained.

Regarding recent remarks from Nnamdi Kanu encouraging a return to normal activities, Uba dismissed claims that Kanu was behind the sit-at-home order.

"When it was stated that he was behind the movement, he clarified that he had no involvement. This group may claim to have canceled it, but the reality is that the Governor has already restored business in Anambra," Uba affirmed.

He commended the state for its improved security situation in the past months.

"Anambra is among the safest states in Nigeria. December was exceptionally peaceful, with no incidents of kidnapping or violence, and that trend continues," he noted.

Uba credited the effectiveness of security agencies in maintaining peace throughout the state.

"The security agencies have been performing admirably to keep Anambra secure."
