Have you ever pondered about your identity? Have you taken the time to comprehend your worth, strengths, weaknesses, interests, and goals? Have you questioned what principles and philosophies guide you? If these inquiries have not crossed your mind, it indicates that you have not embarked on your journey of self-discovery. Failing to discover oneself often leads to conformity with the expectations of others.

It is essential for individuals to dedicate moments to reflect on their lives. Many go through life without asking themselves the fundamental question, 'Who am I?' For Muslims, this introspection is vital for ensuring one remains on the correct path. The question 'Who am I?' is an essential exploration of one's moral and spiritual integrity. The responses to this question should aid us in defining our character and personality. Engaging in self-examination should not be daunting, even if the outcome reveals negative aspects of ourselves.

We should not permit our daily routines to deprive us of opportunities for self-assessment. It is crucial to create time for reflection, as aspects we take for granted could be divergent from the virtues exemplified by Allah's righteous servants. Each moment of solitude provides an opportunity to evaluate whether we are content or greedy, humble or boastful, generous or stingy, diligent or lazy, trustworthy or corrupt, and conscious of God or engaging in sin. We must also interrogate our sincerity in our actions.

Have you ever taken a moment before sleep to evaluate your day? It is important to determine whether your daily activities brought you closer to Allah (SWT) or distanced you from Him. The realization should prompt efforts to capitalize on Allah's mercy through seeking forgiveness for any wrongdoings committed throughout the day. As stated in Qur'an 3:133, 'Be quick in the race for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a Garden whose width is that of the heavens and the earth, prepared for the righteous.'

The next phase of self-discovery involves understanding ourselves through the influences we allow in our lives. Consider questions like: Who are my friends? Do they embody virtuous traits? Is my association with them beneficial to myself or society? If your companions are of questionable repute, it reflects on your character as well. The Prophet (SAW) conveyed, 'Whoever resembles a people (in thought or action) is regarded as one of them.'

For believers, it's critical to assess our commitment to the social responsibilities dictated by the Qur'an and the teachings of the Prophet (SAW). As husbands, do we treat our wives with kindness and attentiveness? As wives, how loyal and respectful are we towards our husbands? Do we provide adequate care for our families and adhere to our religious obligations? As youths, do our behaviors align with the principles set forth in Qur'an 17:23-24, which emphasizes obedience to parents?

Reflect on your daily actions, pondering whether your intentions stem from sincerity and devotion to Allah (SWT). You might want to consider taking a score on how each response weighs positively or negatively. It is crucial to repent for our wrongdoings promptly, for deferred repentance, especially at death, holds no merit. Allah (SWT) reminds us in Qur'an 4:18 that those who persist in wrongdoing until they face death and seek forgiveness are not accepted.

The final stage in self-discovery centers on contemplating if you are ready to welcome the angel of death, Azrail (AS), if he were to approach you at this very moment. If your answer suggests otherwise, it implies you have yet to embark on this journey. Remember, Azrail (AS) grants no reprieve when his time comes. May Allah (SWT) direct us towards self-discovery and awareness, allowing us to acknowledge our shortcomings and repent in a timely manner, thereby benefiting from His infinite mercy. Amin.
