Amidst frequent incidents of bird strikes that have been disrupting flight operations, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) engaged in discussions with United Nigeria Airlines on Tuesday in Lagos. The purpose of this meeting was to identify mitigation strategies and review wider safety concerns within the aviation industry.
Led by FAAN's Managing Director and CEO, Olubunmi Kuku, the meeting gathered high-level officials from both organizations to assess environmental safety protocols, as well as airside operations and infrastructure enhancements at various Nigerian airports.
During the meeting, United Nigeria Airlines’ team, represented by Chairman Obiora Okonkwo, highlighted the adverse operational and financial consequences of bird strikes on their fleet.
The airline's representatives also shared their worries regarding Category II airports, which are characterized by limited operating hours, along with instances of disruptive passenger behavior within airport terminals.
As part of their proposals, the airline requested land in Abuja to create a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility to enhance domestic aircraft maintenance capabilities.
In reply, FAAN reported the implementation of environmental management strategies designed to mitigate bird strike risks. These measures include better management of habitats and grass around airport areas.
FAAN also outlined plans for upgrading airfield lighting systems in Category II airports, with specific improvements planned for Benin and Jos airports.
On the topic of passenger conduct, FAAN committed to bolstering enforcement strategies in response to incidents of unruly behavior.
United Nigeria Airlines’ Chief Operating Officer, Osita Okonkwo, emphasized the necessity for ongoing cooperation between airline operators and airport management, stating that such collaboration is vital for ensuring both operational effectiveness and the safety of passengers.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both parties agreed on the importance of continuous monitoring of bird strike developments and safety indicators as part of a broader effort to enhance reliability and operational standards within Nigeria’s aviation sector.
