Farouk Aliyu has made it clear that the Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket represents a strategic political choice, allowing Nigerian citizens to make their own electoral decisions.
In a recent discussion with ARISE NEWS, Aliyu pointed out that the selection of running mates is fundamentally a decision made by the party and its candidates. He insisted that demographic considerations should be a significant factor in political choices, urging that both Muslim and Christian voters must trust that the government administers its duties fairly and impartially.
"Ultimately, it’s up to the people to decide. Therefore, if the populace feels uncomfortable with a Muslim-Muslim ticket, they have the option to cast their votes for any party they choose," he stated.
Aliyu further rationalized that in light of the demographic composition of the northern part of Nigeria, it is logical for political parties to nominate a Muslim candidate when the data supports such a decision. He elaborated, "The statistics are clear; there is an undeniable majority of Muslims in the northern region. Hence, political parties might prefer to select a Muslim candidate based on these demographics."
He dismissed the notion that a Muslim-Muslim ticket could alienate Christian voters in the southern regions, arguing that representation should mirror the population distribution rather than assumptions of bias. "We are talking about numbers; in the north, the population consists of a greater number of Muslims than Christians. Thus, this representation is valid."
Regarding potential political repercussions, Aliyu acknowledged that ignoring the demographic realities could lead to tensions in northern regions. "Definitely, if a Muslim candidate were replaced with a Christian in the northern part, it would provoke issues due to the demographic makeup we are discussing."
He also touched on broader criticisms regarding political leadership and advisory committees, asserting that President Bola Tinubu's decisions are informed by a diverse group of advisors from across the nation, not limited to metropolitan elites. "The president is surrounded by many individuals who do not hail exclusively from affluent urban areas. I can name numerous advisors who are from various backgrounds and regions. As the leader of Nigeria, he engages with a wide circle of advisors, and I am confident that President Bola Tinubu does not navigate this responsibility alone, as he has people from all parts of Nigeria assisting him in governance."
