The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has called for increased collaboration among government bodies and stakeholders to eliminate obstacles to the advancement of women in various sectors within Nigeria’s development framework.
Grace Ike, the chairman of the council, made this appeal in a statement shared with journalists on Sunday in Abuja, marking the observance of the 2026 International Women’s Day.
The theme for this year's International Women’s Day celebration, "Give to Gain," underscores the significance of investing in women’s growth and creating opportunities that promote sustainable development.
Ike stated that empowering women yields extensive benefits, fostering inclusive newsrooms that enhance storytelling, fortify governance, and promote fairness in representation, thus contributing to the creation of societies that prioritize equity.
She acknowledged the unwavering resilience, professionalism, and commitment to truth that women journalists exhibit despite challenges, significantly aiding public service and the fortification of democratic values.
She pointed out that female journalists are pioneering in their fields by tackling demanding assignments, influencing public conversation, mentoring emerging professionals, and consistently demonstrating that excellence in the profession transcends gender barriers. (NAN)
