The Federal Government is encouraging private universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education to formally express their interest and collaborate with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) as a part of initiatives to foster digital transformation in the nation's tertiary education landscape.
Education Minister, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, announced this initiative as the government works towards increasing accessibility to the Tertiary Education Research and Application Service (TERAS), which is a national digital platform aimed at enhancing teaching, learning, research, and institutional efficiency.
Dr. Alausa stated that this initiative showcases the government's dedication to fortifying and protecting the education ecosystem in Nigeria through strategic public-private partnerships. He reiterated that sustainable advancement in the education sector necessitates collective effort and inclusive collaborations.
He elaborated that expanding the TERAS initiative, which has been implemented with TETFund, signifies a significant step in Nigeria’s agenda for digital education reform. Historically exclusive to public institutions, the platform is now extending its benefits to eligible private institutions, allowing them access to premium digital services available nationally.
The minister outlined that TERAS functions as a cohesive national digital framework that provides organized integration, dependable connectivity services, cost-effectiveness, standardization of quality assurance, and data- driven decision-making tools. He emphasized that these characteristics are vital for enhancing the performance of institutions and ensuring that Nigerian tertiary establishments maintain competitiveness on both local and international levels.
Dr. Alausa remarked that integrating private tertiary institutions aligns with the Federal Government’s overarching goal of creating a unified, inclusive, and robust higher education ecosystem that adheres to global best practices. He highlighted that collective participation in TERAS would enhance cooperation among institutions, increase negotiating power, and expedite the development of a shared digital future for Nigeria's higher education.
In light of this, the minister urged private universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education interested in joining the TERAS platform to officially express their interest and collaborate with TETFund through the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities. He stressed that collaborative and inclusive participation is crucial for achieving ongoing progress within the education sector.
The Ministry of Education reaffirmed that this initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's education agenda, which focuses on providing access to quality, inclusive education. It aims to prepare Nigeria’s higher education institutions for greater relevance in learning, research, and innovation, ultimately contributing to national growth.
