The Federal Government has embarked on a reform initiative aimed at advancing the educational framework, particularly focusing on polytechnic education, which is regarded as vital for national progress.
In a speech reflecting on the theme, "Transforming Polytechnic Education in Nigeria: Innovation, Good Governance and Sustainability for National Development," Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa reinforced the Tinubu administration's dedication to restructuring polytechnics to serve as catalysts for skills, productivity, and industrial enhancement.
He characterized innovation as the "driving force" of the sector and encouraged educational institutions to bolster entrepreneurship centers, research facilities, and collaborative efforts with industries to turn ideas into viable market solutions.
Dr. Alausa's message echoed previous statements made by Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu SAN, the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). He highlighted pervasive corruption within tertiary institutions, including procurement fraud, misuse of funds, payroll manipulation, and the trafficking of examination results and certificates, all of which have compromised standards, diminished infrastructure, and eroded public trust. This reality, according to Dr. Alausa, emphasizes the need for strong governance to underpin any substantial reform.
"The time for impunity in our institutions has come to an end," stated the Minister, advocating for transparency, principled leadership, fiscal responsibility, and an uncompromising stance against corruption. He urged Governing Councils and management teams to steer clear of conflicts of interest, prioritize merit, and ensure timely audits, affirming that accountability is crucial to entice investment and reignite faith in public education.
Earlier, during his welcome remarks, Dr. Sani Usman Tunga, the Chairman of COHEADS, called on attendees to recognize that polytechnics and colleges of technology are pivotal to Nigeria’s future. They bear the responsibility of developing a skilled, innovative, and entrepreneurial workforce essential for diversifying the economy, curbing unemployment, and fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals.
