The Federal Government has introduced unique Learner Identification Numbers (LIN) for over 1.9 million students registered for the 2026 West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations. This move is part of a broader strategy to improve data administration and combat examination fraud.

The LIN system assigns each student a permanent academic identifier, which will facilitate better data management, track academic development, and reinforce the credibility of public examinations.

Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, highlighted the initiative as a significant achievement aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. He stated that the system is designed to support educational continuity and ensure that no student is overlooked.

The learner ID is designed to record essential student information, including their geographical location and school details, allowing for consistent monitoring even if students transfer to different institutions. This feature is also expected to deter impersonation during exams and streamline verification processes.

“This programme represents a pivotal moment for our educational landscape. By giving every learner a distinct number, we are establishing a framework that supports each child’s educational journey from the classroom to their chosen career, ensuring no one is left behind,” the Minister commented.

The platform operates under the Digitised National Education Management Information System, connecting students with accredited schools across the country, each possessing its own unique identification code.

In addition to bolstering examination integrity, this system will assist the government in identifying out-of-school children, tracking dropout rates, and addressing learning deficiencies through focused interventions.

The platform is entirely digital, accessible to the public, and designed with environmental consciousness, marking a substantial step forward in modernising Nigeria’s educational infrastructure.

The ministry further announced plans to extend this initiative to encompass all students in both public and private educational institutions in the subsequent phase, appealing to all stakeholders for their cooperation in ensuring its comprehensive implementation.
