Finidi George, the head coach of Rivers United, has made it evident that caution is not an option as the team prepares for their crucial CAF Champions League match against Zambia’s Power Dynamos at home.
With the daunting task of recovering from only one point secured in their opening group matches, Finidi conveyed his thoughts during a press briefing before the return-leg encounter in Uyo, underscoring the team's urgent need for a turnaround in their continental journey.
"There’s no time for excuses; we must win, period. This is a critical juncture for us," Finidi stated, as he highlighted the significance of home advantage and familiarity with the opponent as elements that could swing the game in their favor.
The coach noted, "This will be our fourth match against them, and we played them just last week, so the memory of that match is still fresh," reinforcing the necessity for the players to channel their previous experiences into a winning strategy.
Finidi further remarked, "We need little discussion with the players; what we require now is to roll up our sleeves and strive for the full three points."
As the pressure mounts, he acknowledged the necessity for a pragmatic approach to this fixture. "We are focusing on results rather than style at this moment," he explained, adding that if the team manages to score more goals, it would be a welcome outcome.
He elaborated on the defensive performance, insisting that strong defensive plays are crucial to winning matches. "If we execute effectively, whether it’s just one goal or more, we’ll adapt accordingly. Our priority is to secure the win, which may require us to tighten our defense," he affirmed.
Reflecting on the team dynamics, Finidi emphasized that football is inherently a collective effort. He noted instances from previous matches where different players stepped up to make vital contributions.
"In football, different players can emerge as heroes; last time it was our goalkeeper, and we commend him for his efforts. However, we hope for broader contributions from the whole team in our next game," he asserted.
Regarding the playing conditions, Finidi subtly hinted at tactics involving the pitch quality. He recalled that the field in Zambia was not ideal and planned to ensure a better surface in Uyo. "We observed the bumpy and dry nature of the pitch; it might have served their advantage. In Uyo, we will prepare a wet pitch to enhance the ball’s circulation," he shared.
Looking forward with cautious optimism, Finidi expressed confidence in his team. "A coach must have faith in his squad. Our strategy here will differ with the home ground advantage. If the players execute the plans we discussed, a favorable outcome is likely," he concluded.
Team captain Temple Emekayi echoed the coach's sentiments and called upon the fans for unwavering support ahead of the vital match, slated for 5 p.m. at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
"We appeal to our fans to rally behind us tomorrow. We will fight hard not to disappoint them, and we are focused on securing a victory," Emekayi stated firmly.
