A significant number of official records including files and documents were lost when a fire swept through storage offices at the Kwara State University of Education on Friday evening.
The fire broke out around 9:14 PM, affecting three out of the four offices in the building.
Witnessing students mentioned that the university's biology laboratory was also impacted by the incident.
As reported by Daily Trust, the facility was previously known as the Kwara State College of Education before being re-established as the University of Education by the state government.
Authorities suspect that the fire started due to an unidentified individual igniting dry bushes, which subsequently spread to the structure.
Fire Service spokesperson, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed the incident on Saturday. He stated that firefighters promptly responded and successfully contained the fire, preventing it from reaching the biology laboratory and adjacent buildings.
He further reported that several vital documents were salvaged during firefighting efforts.
Adekunle shared that the Director of the Fire Service, Alabi Muhammed, has urged the public and institutions to refrain from indiscriminate bush burning, especially in areas close to educational facilities. Additionally, he emphasized the necessity for proper management of vegetation, maintaining buffer zones, securing important documents, and equipping institutions with basic firefighting tools to mitigate fire losses.
The Kwara State Fire Service reiterated its dedication to safeguarding lives and property throughout the state.
