Authorities in Kenya have taken into custody a former boyfriend believed to have orchestrated a horrific acid attack on a 24-year-old woman named Mary Claire.
Preliminary details indicate that the suspect, identified as Elvis Opiro, allegedly employed an assailant to carry out the crime.
The assailant reportedly ambushed Mary as she was returning home, splashing her with a corrosive liquid that has resulted in severe facial injuries.
Quick action from bystanders allowed them to apprehend the suspect as he tried to escape, leading to a confrontation.
An enraged crowd quickly gathered around him, but he was rescued by police who intervened. He is now in custody at the Kibera Police Station.
Mary Claire is presently fighting for her life at Kenyatta National Hospital, where she is receiving expert medical care.
In November of the previous year, Claire had complained about the main suspect's earlier assault on her, yet no measures were taken to arrest or charge him.
Mike Sonko, the former Governor of Nairobi, confirmed in a statement on March 22 that authorities successfully captured the suspect utilizing a strategic operation.
Investigations are ongoing, and the suspect is under police detention as the case develops.
