In 30 to 45 days, cargo operations will begin at the Gateway International Airport, which is expecting its first cargo flight from Europe.

Governor Dapo Abiodun provided this update during a site inspection at the Industrial Platform located within the Remo Free Trade Zone, situated along the Sagamu–Ijebu-Ode Expressway, on Thursday.

The Remo Industrial Platform is part of a Special Agro-Processing Zone initiative that was envisioned towards the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, aimed at spurring agro-industrial development and establishing Ogun State as a notable hub for processing and export.

During his address, Governor Abiodun noted that the access road leading from the Sagamu–Benin Expressway directly to the airport is set to be opened soon, highlighting its importance in aligning with global infrastructural standards.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, Mr. Manoj Kumar (Construction Head, Arise IIP), and Mr. Prasad Sane (Business Head, Arise IIP) during a site visit at the IPR Industrial Platform, Remo Free Zone.

“This road connects directly from the Sagamu–Benin Expressway to the airport and will not have any winding paths; it is designed to ensure straightforward access in accordance with international standards,” he explained.

He added that the project, initially recommended to his administration by the African Development Bank, has been transformed into the Industrial Platform currently underway.

The governor expressed hope to inaugurate the first processing companies within a few months, stating several firms are already in the construction phase of their facilities.

As part of his inspection, he visited a large warehouse under construction, acknowledging the swift developmental efforts being seen in the zone.

Abiodun emphasized an integrated system within the facility, allowing for both agricultural production and processing which enhances operational efficiency and adds value.

He also mentioned that the free trade zone will be equipped with dedicated power supplies, waste management systems, an independent administrative structure, and strong security provisions.

Additionally, Governor Abiodun indicated that the zone is poised to host one of the largest cotton garment processing factories globally, which he projects will create substantial employment and stimulate industrial growth.

A Special Agro-Processing Zone refers to a specific area allocated for transforming raw agricultural materials into finished goods, akin to a processing mall. Abiodun added that Ogun State has partnered with a firm experienced in successfully implementing similar projects in Benin Republic, Lomé, Côte d'Ivoire, and across various African nations, describing this collaboration as the Ogun State-Arise initiative that has contributed to the establishment of the Industrial Platform.

The governor acknowledged the vital support provided by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu via the Federal Ministries of Agriculture and Industry, pointing out that projects of this transformative nature are made possible through sound macroeconomic governance.

He concluded by reiterating that effectively executed policies yield job opportunities, encourage industrial development, and ultimately enhance the economic conditions of local households.
