Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has called on Team Bayelsa to defend their title at the Niger Delta Games taking place in Benin, Edo State.
Diri issued this directive on Thursday during the weekly prosperity walk at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa, where he reaffirmed his government's dedication to advancing sports development.
He noted that Bayelsa has strategically positioned itself to host major sports events in the future by investing in necessary sporting infrastructures.
The ongoing construction of a 30,000-seat stadium at Igbogene is a key part of the state government's vision for enhancing the sports sector.
Governor Diri encouraged both the athletes and team officials to stay disciplined and focused as they aim to retain their title in the competition.
"This team is the defending champion, and I have faith in your ability to succeed despite the varying age dynamics in this year's edition. We topped the inaugural NDDC Games and I trust you can maintain that lead," he remarked.
The Bayelsa team, composed of 270 athletes, is set to compete across 16 events in Benin.
