California Governor Gavin Newsom showcased striking red knee pads at the World Economic Forum held in Davos on Thursday, which he claimed represented leaders and institutions capitulating to the Trump administration.

During a session at the forum, Newsom articulated that the knee pads, adorned with Donald Trump's signature, could be purchased via a website he launched. He remarked, "The previous batch of knee pads was sold out, similar to how our law firms are compromised. A multitude of American universities and several corporate executives are succumbing to this administration," he stated while displaying one of the knee pads to the audience.

The governor escalated his denunciation by accusing global figures of bending the knee to Trump. "I cannot accept this complicity of individuals letting things slide," he noted earlier in Davos. "I ought to have brought several knee pads for the world leaders." He subsequently argued that the United States no longer functions under the rule of law but is governed by what he referred to as "the rule of Don," stating, "Co-equal branches of government, the rule of law, popular sovereignty—does that portray the America you read about today? The rule of law is non-existent; it’s the rule of Don."

Newsom mentioned that a planned speech at USA House, which is a privately organized venue at the forum, was abruptly canceled right after Trump addressed the attendees. "I was set to speak last night… They guaranteed that I wouldn’t. They ensured it was canceled," Newsom expressed, later criticizing this decision on social media. USA House does not represent the US government and is backed by prominent companies such as Microsoft, Pfizer, and Ripple.

Trump acknowledged Newsom’s attendance during his own address, labeling him a “good guy” and recalling that they previously had a positive rapport. Reports stated that Newsom declined a subsequent invitation to join USA House for a “VIP Nightcap.”

Regularly attending Davos since his tenure as San Francisco's mayor, Newsom is largely considered a potential Democratic candidate for the 2028 presidential election. He has engaged in public disputes with Trump and other prominent Republicans, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, portraying himself as a strong critic of Trump’s effects on US politics and international business leaders.
