Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has ordered an immediate inquiry into the fire outbreak that occurred at the Nurul Haqq Quranic and Arabic School located in Birnin Kebbi.
The fire, which took place on Saturday evening, impacted various hostels and classrooms within the school compound.
The governor made the announcement just after overseeing the emergency response operations at the site.
He stressed the importance of the investigating committee to thoroughly investigate the underlying causes of the incident and suggest necessary actions to avoid similar incidents in the future across schools in the state.
Idris noted that he spotted thick smoke while on his way to break his Ramadan fast and directed his convoy to stop promptly to check the source of the smoke.
Emergency services, including the fire department, successfully evacuated 140 students from the school premises while battling the fire, which raged for about three to four hours.
He stated that the fire was particularly severe due to gas cylinders located in some of the students’ rooms, emphasizing the unfortunate nature of the incident and the critical need for investigations to learn from the experience.
