Governor Seyi Makinde has voiced apprehension regarding the current state of Nigeria's democratic landscape, cautioning that the nation might be progressively moving towards a single-party structure.

In a recent newsletter titled “The business of governance,” the governor of Oyo State indicated that recent political events are raising significant questions about the future of democratic equilibrium within the country.

He stated that individuals expressing dissenting opinions are frequently subjected to open threats, and that alternative political avenues are being diminished.

“Voices that speak up… are being openly threatened. Opposition is being fragmented, constrained, or pushed to the margins,” Makinde observed.

This development, according to the governor, is causing some Nigerians to disengage from political discourse, feeling that their contributions are no longer impactful.

Makinde emphasized that a robust democracy relies on a strong opposition, viable alternatives, and public trust in governing institutions.

“When opposition becomes ineffective, accountability weakens,” he added.

The governor also issued a warning against public apathy, suggesting that indifference at this juncture could lead to outcomes that are difficult to rectify later.

“I do not believe Nigeria has reached a point of no return. But silence or withdrawal could take us in a direction we may struggle to reverse,” he stated.

He issued a call for both leaders and citizens to remain actively involved in safeguarding the nation's democratic space.

Governor Makinde further announced his intention to consult with stakeholders from various sectors in the coming days to deliberate on strategies for strengthening Nigeria's democracy.
