Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has conveyed his deep sorrow over the demise of Alhaji Abubakar Abdullahi, the Imam of Yelwa, Gindin Akwati, situated within the Barkin Ladi Local Government Area.
Abdullahi is renowned for his heroic act of sheltering more than 262 Christians during a violent assault on the community in 2018, a brave initiative that not only saved lives but garnered him both national and international acknowledgment.
In a statement released by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, Governor Mutfwang portrayed the late Imam as a purpose-driven individual, whose existence was characterized by a steadfast dedication to peace, unity, and the safeguarding of the vulnerable, especially women and children.
The governor elaborated that the Imam’s brave leadership in fostering peace and protecting lives has left a legacy that others should aspire to, underscoring that his acts have brought honor to his community, Plateau State, and the nation as a whole.
"The loss of Imam Abubakar Abdullahi is not only significant for his family but for his community and Plateau State as a whole," he remarked.
Governor Mutfwang acknowledged the late cleric's relentless efforts in advocating for interfaith peace, which helped build bridges of forgiveness, compassion, and empathy among various communities both within the state and beyond.
"This respected community figure devoted his life to promoting the welfare, development, and progress of his community, and his abrupt departure will undoubtedly leave a considerable void in the leadership of Yelwa, Gindin Akwati, and Barkin Ladi Local Government Area," he added.
The governor expressed a wish for God to inspire leaders of integrity and wisdom to carry on the legacy exemplified by the late Imam, particularly during a time when the state is in dire need of guidance, wisdom, and a unifying figure like him.
He urged the late Imam's family and the larger community to find comfort in the knowledge that he lived a life enriched with faith, compassion, and fairness, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of service and peaceful coexistence.
"On behalf of my family, the government, and the citizens of Plateau State, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the grieving family and all others affected by this loss, and I pray that Almighty God grants them the comfort and fortitude to endure this profound loss," he concluded.
