Governor Babajide Olushola Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has given the green light for the recruitment of 150 extra firefighters to bolster emergency services and enhance safety for residents within the state.
This decision was made public through a press release from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, as stated by the agency's Controller General, Margaret Adeseye, at the commencement of the LSFRS Squad 23 training exercise taking place in Ikeja.
Adeseye noted that this recruitment is part of the ongoing efforts by the Sanwo-Olu administration aimed at developing a resilient and professionally equipped fire and rescue service capable of effectively managing emergencies.
She further elaborated that this initiative builds upon previous recruitment efforts under the current government, which included the hiring of 100 firefighters back in 2020, just prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2022, Lagos witnessed its highest recruitment in the fire service's history, with 435 firefighters signed on. Their Passing Out Parade coincided with the service's Golden Jubilee celebrations, during which 62 firefighting vehicles and several new fire stations were inaugurated in locations such as Ajegunle, Ebute Elefun, and Oba Oniru Lekki, alongside a modern headquarters at Alausa, Ikeja.
The newly hired firefighters, who commenced their employment in November 2025, are currently undergoing rigorous training at the upgraded Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service Academy.
They are participating in the Professional Basic Firefighting Competency and Short Service Course, designed to cultivate disciplined and highly skilled emergency responders in accordance with global standards.
Adeseye highlighted that the state government remains dedicated to investing in the development of personnel, as well as improving infrastructure and equipment to protect lives, property, and the environment.
The statement, dated January 20, 2026, was officially signed by Maria Fadairo, Public Affairs Officer for the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
