Erling Haaland scored a penalty in stoppage time, leading Manchester City to a dramatic 2-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday. This victory is crucial in keeping City's Premier League title hopes alive as they now trail leaders Arsenal by just six points.

City appeared on course to leave Merseyside without any points when Dominik Szoboszlai's spectacular free kick put Liverpool ahead in the 74th minute. However, a late equalizer from Bernardo Silva sparked a thrilling conclusion to the match.

Haaland's decisive goal, his 21st of the league season, came deep into the added time after Matheus Nunes was fouled in the box by Alisson, Liverpool's goalkeeper. The Norwegian forward converted the penalty with composure, marking his first league goal at Anfield and quieting the home supporters.

The closing minutes of the match were fraught with drama. Manchester City's Rayan Cherki appeared to have scored a remarkable goal from halfway after Alisson had advanced forward, but following a VAR review, the goal was disallowed. Instead, City was granted a free kick, and Szoboszlai was issued a red card for pulling Haaland's shirt.

City's manager, Pep Guardiola, reflected on the match's intensity afterward, stating, “Come on referee, give the goal and go home. It was a brilliant advert for the Premier League. The first half was quite strong, though we lost a bit of energy in the second half. Anfield can create such an atmosphere.”

He acknowledged Szoboszlai's impressive strike, praising his team's resilience led by captain Bernardo Silva.

Throughout the opening exchanges, Manchester City held control of the ball, nearly scoring in under two minutes when Silva set up Haaland, who was thwarted by Alisson’s quick intervention.

New signing Marc Guehi faced a hostile crowd but performed excellently, neutralizing Liverpool's threats from Mohamed Salah and Hugo Ekitike, as the home team struggled to register any shots on goal in the first half.

Just before halftime, Liverpool believed they had a penalty when Salah went down under Silva's challenge during a set piece, but neither the referee nor VAR awarded it.

Following the restart, Liverpool came alive, putting City on the defensive as Ekitike squandered two opportunities and Szoboszlai tested Gianluigi Donnarumma’s resolve. Szoboszlai eventually broke the deadlock with a curling free kick that flew past the City keeper.

City managed to respond ten minutes later when Haaland's header found Silva, who finished confidently from close range to equalize.

Silva emphasized the significance of the match, stating that a loss would have severely jeopardized their title aspirations. "Considering our standing against Arsenal, this venue is the toughest in the Premier League. We needed to push for another goal and indeed, Erling delivered,” he shared with Sky Sports.

The outcome keeps Manchester City firmly in the title race, having initially faced the prospect of a nine-point gap. Meanwhile, Liverpool falls to 6th position, now eleven points behind Guardiola’s squad.
