Dr. Gbenga Hashim, who is vying for the presidency under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has commenced efforts to reconcile the party's conflicting factions as the 2027 elections approach.
The PDP has been mired in legal confrontations and internal strife since the conclusion of the 2023 elections, particularly regarding disputes stemming from the national convention held in Ibadan.
A source connected to Hashim indicated that the presidential aspirant, who has been part of the PDP since its establishment in 1998, is actively engaging with significant stakeholders from various factions to curb the growing internal rifts and prepare the party for future electoral battles.
“The reconciliation initiative was set in motion in January with talks involving leaders from the Turaki bloc, and it subsequently expanded to include discussions with Malam Abdulrahman, a key player often linked to former Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike,” the source elaborated.
Discussions primarily focused on the political implications of ongoing litigations within the party and their effects on the party’s overall structure.
Hashim has also sought advice from notable former Heads of State, including Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida, who, while not publicly commenting, are believed to have emphasized the importance of unity, stability, and national competitiveness as foundational elements for revitalizing the party.
Reports suggest that the failure to settle these enduring conflicts has prompted several members, including governors, to exit the party. Recently, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri switched allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC), and there are rumors that Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal is contemplating a similar move.
