Ibadan’s Medical Practitioners Seek Olubadan’s Backing for Outreach, Scholarships and New Medical University

The Federation of Ibadan Indigenes Medical Practitioners appealed to the Olubadan of Ibadanland for support in launching medical outreach programmes, funding scholarships for needy Ibadan‑origin students and establishing a state university of medical sciences in the city.

Federation of Ibadan Indigenes Medical Practitioners (FIIMEP) met with the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, to request his patronage for a series of health‑related initiatives, scholarship funding and the creation of a state university of medical sciences in Ibadan. The delegation, led by convener Aare (Dr) Gbola Adetunji, presented the proposals during a recent palace visit.

Key points presented included: the intention to roll out regular medical outreach camps offering basic consultations, health education, screening for prevalent conditions and referral pathways; a scholarship scheme targeting indigent but academically qualified Ibadan‑origin medical students across accredited Nigerian schools; and a mentorship programme linking senior doctors with junior practitioners. Adetunji also highlighted the federation’s aim to lobby for greater representation of qualified Ibadan indigenes in senior roles within major medical institutions.

"Our goal is to harness the expertise of Ibadan‑born doctors, both at home and abroad, to improve health outcomes for our community," Adetunji said. He added that the scholarship fund would draw contributions from federation members, philanthropists, corporate partners and other development stakeholders.

What are the federation’s long‑term ambitions?

The group plans to champion the establishment of a state university of medical sciences in Ibadan, a project that would require feasibility studies, stakeholder consultations and formal government approval. The proposed university aims to expand medical education capacity, boost research output and produce more qualified health professionals for the region.

When did the federation’s founder receive his traditional title?

Adetunji traced the inspiration for FIIMEP to his conferment as Aare Baasegun of Ibadanland on July 4, 2025, by the late Olubadan, Oba Akinloye Owolabi Olakulehin. He said the honour reinforced his commitment to the city’s development.

How did the Olubadan respond?

Oba Ladoja expressed delight at the outreach plans, pledging to assist FIIMEP in securing scholarships for financially constrained Ibadan indigenes studying medicine. He also voiced a desire to collaborate on addressing the shortage of medical personnel and improving the condition of health facilities throughout Ibadan.

The meeting concluded with Adetunji thanking the monarch and seeking the palace’s continued guidance and support for the federation’s health and educational projects.

Olubadan of Ibadanland and the proposed state university of medical sciences remain central to the federation’s vision for a healthier, better‑educated Ibadan.
