The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has mandated an inquiry into claims that several police officers in Lagos solicited $1,000 from a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
This action follows a formal complaint lodged by Charles Mbarogu, who asserted that the officers from the Ladegboye Police Station, situated along Ijede Road in Ikorodu, stopped him on February 28, 2026, as he was en route to Epe with his girlfriend.
Mbarogu recounted that after verifying his vehicle documents and NYSC identification, the officers accused him of being a fraudster, commonly referred to as a "Yahoo boy," and detained him.
He later took to social media, alleging that he was driven around for close to three hours, during which he faced pressure to confess to fraud and was coerced into transferring $1,000 after one officer reportedly noticed substantial funds in his cryptocurrency account.
Mbarogu claimed that the officers went through his phone and private conversations without his permission and issued threats of involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Furthermore, he alleged that his girlfriend was transported separately in his car, during which she was injured after jumping out of the moving vehicle in panic.
He also stated that his NYSC cap was discarded, his identification card was torn, and his vehicle sustained damage.
In response to the incident, Force Public Relations Officer Benjamin Hundeyin affirmed that the Lagos State Police Command is tasked with conducting an investigation and ensuring that any officers found guilty face appropriate consequences.
He urged Mbarogu to coordinate with the state police spokesperson for further developments.
