Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has revealed that the Nigeria Police Force has expanded its Mobile Force by adding six new squadrons, raising the total nationwide from 74 to 80.
This initiative aims to bolster operational readiness.
The IGP explained that this expansion is designed to enhance the rapid response capability of the police and provide better tactical support in addressing high-risk security situations throughout the country.
In addition to increasing the Mobile Force, Egbetokun announced the establishment of new Area Commands and Divisions across the nation to facilitate closer community policing, improve command efficiency, and fortify coverage in rapidly developing and strategically significant areas.
Egbetokun made these comments while hosting the Committee of Retired Inspectors-General of Police during a solidarity visit at his office at Louis Edet House in Abuja.
Emphasizing broader institutional reforms, Egbetokun noted that a significant structural change under his leadership includes upgrading the Intelligence Unit to full departmental status.
He mentioned that this move underscores the crucial role that intelligence plays in modern policing and preventing crime proactively.
Furthermore, the IGP announced the formation of a new tactical unit, the Special Intervention Squad, which has already achieved notable success in states where it has been deployed for targeted operations.
"In addition to operational reforms, we are renewing our focus on professionalism, ethics, and discipline as the foundation for effective policing," he stated.
The IGP also highlighted that weekly training sessions centered on policing ethics, professional conduct, and service standards are now mandatory at the State Command level to continuously develop officers' skills and enhance their performance.
He reiterated his commitment to improving morale and ensuring institutional justice through a transparent and merit-based personnel management system within the Force.
