A man has been detained in Georgia for allegedly murdering his wife and three other family members, while their frightened children hid in a closet before dialing emergency services.
51-year-old Vijay Kumar, residing in Atlanta, faces charges of four counts of murder, aggravated assault, and cruelty to children linked to the events of January 23.
Law enforcement officers responded to Brook Ivy Court in Lawrenceville early that morning after receiving alerts about gunfire within a home.
Upon reaching the location, authorities discovered the deceased bodies of four adults, all apparently victims of gunshot wounds.
The deceased have been identified as Kumar’s spouse, Meemu Dogra, aged 43, and three others: Gourav Cumar, 33, Nidhi Chander, 37, and Harish Chander, 38.
Three children were found in the residence, safely hiding in a closet, as reported by the Gwinnett County Police Department. Kumar was located a short distance away and was arrested without resistance.
Investigators believe that a dispute between Dogra and Kumar escalated at their home in Atlanta, which prompted them to travel to the residence on Brook Ivy Court along with their 12-year-old child.
Cumar and the Chanders had gathered there too, along with two other children, ages seven and ten. The 12-year-old made the call to 911, according to police accounts.
The specific details surrounding the argument remain unclear, including why the family went to the residence or what instigated the tragic occurrence.
Kumar is now facing severe charges, including four counts of aggravated assault, four counts of felony murder, four counts of malice murder, one count of first-degree cruelty to children, and two counts of third-degree cruelty to children.
In an official statement shared on X, the Indian Mission in Atlanta conveyed its sorrow regarding the unfortunate shooting incident tied to an alleged family dispute, wherein an Indian national was among those killed.
They added, "The alleged shooter has been apprehended, and we are providing all possible support to the grieving family."
