An infant girl, just seven months old, has lost her life in New York City following a shooting incident that investigators suspect was an intentional act directed at her father. The tragic event occurred in East Williamsburg on a Wednesday afternoon.

The baby, identified as Kaori Patterson-Moore, was with her parents, Jamari Patterson and Lianna Charles-Moore, in a double stroller alongside her two- year-old brother when the assailants opened fire.

Authorities have indicated that the father, Jamari Patterson, had been involved in a dispute on social media with individuals connected to a rival housing development. It is believed the perpetrators were seeking to harm him.

The shooting took place around 1:20 p.m. near the intersection of Humboldt and Moore Streets. Reports suggest two individuals on a moped travelled against traffic on the street before discharging firearms towards a group that included adults, children, and the stroller.

Crime scene investigators examine the area where the shooting occurred.

Kaori sustained a fatal gunshot wound, while her toddler brother was grazed on his back. The distressed family sought refuge in a nearby establishment immediately after the attack.

Kaori's mother, Lianna Charles-Moore, recounted the harrowing moments of the assault. She initially mistook the gunshots for fireworks. "My son jumped out of the stroller and I picked him up and carried him," she stated. "I was hugging him and then when I looked to my left, my daughter was just there, lying there. She was shot in the head. She was just bleeding. It was just too much."

She also mentioned that Kaori had recently begun uttering her first words, including "mamma." Following the shooting, the suspects fled the scene, but their moped crashed two blocks away. Police reported that the passenger was ejected from the vehicle and subsequently transported to the hospital with an injured leg.

The individual, identified as 21-year-old Amuri Greene, is considered a person of interest in the case and is expected to face murder charges. He was also taken into custody concerning a separate domestic incident.

Police cordon off the street following the fatal shooting of a baby.

Law enforcement agencies are still actively searching for the driver of the moped. While the driver's identity is known to investigators, it has not been publicly disclosed. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that surveillance footage shows the suspects intentionally entering the area before the passenger opened fire multiple times.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani denounced the violence, emphasizing the city's need to avoid becoming desensitized to such tragedies. "We cannot accept this as normal in our city. We cannot grow numb to this pain," he remarked, calling for more comprehensive measures to combat gun violence. A manhunt continues as authorities work to apprehend the second suspect.
