The First Lady of Anambra State, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has called on women to be more proactive in their involvement in politics and governance to ensure their representation in decision-making processes.
In a statement released on Sunday in Awka to mark the 2026 International Women’s Day, which is globally celebrated on March 8, Soludo highlighted the need for women to enhance their participation in leadership roles.
The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day, "Give To Gain", is focused on celebrating women's achievements while promoting gender equality and expanding opportunities for women in society.
Soludo emphasized the necessity for women to transition from being passive participants to being central figures in national discussions surrounding gender equality and development.
She pointed out that for effective progress in gender inclusivity, there needs to be a stronger dedication and tangible actions from women and societal stakeholders.
"Women must take the initiative to influence their future by being active participants in politics and ensuring they occupy positions where critical societal decisions are made," she remarked.
Soludo also encouraged women with political aspirations to step forward with confidence and pursue leadership roles.
She underscored the importance of women taking bold steps towards leadership, assuring them that they would receive backing from those advocating for greater gender inclusivity in governance.
Additionally, Mrs. Soludo commended Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her efforts in proposing legislation aimed at securing a designated number of seats for women in the National Assembly.
She noted that women have consistently proven their competency, professionalism, and capable leadership when provided opportunities in public office.
