Mo Abudu, a prominent filmmaker and media entrepreneur in Nollywood, has announced a new cast for the upcoming film adaptation of ‘The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives.’
This revelation was made recently on her Instagram page, where the CEO of EbonyLife Media shared news that a fresh ensemble of actors would be joining what promises to be one of the most ambitious ensemble productions in Nigerian cinema.
“Hello, beautiful people! The Baba Segi Collective is thrilled to introduce an additional lineup of incredible talents joining the cast of The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives, our Christmas special film,” Abudu posted.
“As our creative journey advances, our commitment to assembling a powerful ensemble of actors to bring this unforgettable story to life remains unchanged.”
She further expressed excitement for the new performers, stating, “Each of them brings their unique energy, depth, and magic to the world of Baba Segi, and we cannot wait for you to experience the drama, humor, and heart they will bring to the screen.”
The upcoming cast includes well-known figures like Faithia Williams, Damilola Adegbite, Nancy Isime, Uzor Arukwe, Mike Ezuronye, Blessing Jessica Obasi, Nkechi Blessing Sunday, social media influencer Maleek Sanni, and Mallu Marik.
These new actors will join an already impressive team previously announced by the producers, featuring Odunlade Adekola in the leading role of Baba Segi.
Other notable cast members include Iyabo Ojo, Mercy Aigbe, Bimbo Ademoye, Omowunmi Dada, Shaffy Bello, and Bisola Aiyeola.
The talented ensemble also incorporates Lateef Adedimeji, Kunle Remi, Bolaji Ogunmola, Bimbo Manuel, Tina Mba, Daniel Effiong, Femi Branch, Rotimi Fakunle, Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori (KieKie), and Constance Olatunde.
Adapted from the highly regarded 2010 novel by Lola Shoneyin, which is recognized as a modern classic in Nigerian literature, the film is set to resonate widely.
The book has been translated into various languages and was previously adapted into a successful stage play that has been performed both in Nigeria and on international platforms.
Set in Ibadan, this story revolves around Baba Segi, a prosperous polygamist, and his four wives, whose seemingly stable lives are shattered by underlying rivalries, struggles with infertility, patriarchal challenges, and dark secrets.
The arrival of his youngest and most educated wife disrupts their delicate balance, unearthing revelations that challenge established customs and authority.
Producers have indicated that this film adaptation will uphold the core themes from the novel, including gender dynamics, power struggles in polygamous families, sexuality, and the societal expectations imposed on women. They aim to broaden its emotional and visual depth for a modern audience.
Blending drama, satire, and social critique, ‘The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives’ is anticipated to attract both local and global viewers.
The film is expected to premiere in December, aligning it with the holiday season as a major cinematic release. While the specifics of its distribution and streaming agreements remain undisclosed, the scale of casting and production indicates a potential wide theatrical release alongside global streaming opportunities.
