A significant political shift is occurring in Kaduna State as Isa Ashiru, a former candidate for governorship, exits the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
On March 27, Ashiru sent a formal letter to the leadership at his local ward, making known his decision to resign due to persistent and troubling internal conflicts within the party.
In his resignation letter, he expressed, "After careful reflection on the ongoing internal leadership crisis, strife, and division within the PDP, it has become exceedingly challenging for me to remain an active member of the party. This decision is personal and I have made it in good faith. Please accept this notice as my formal resignation from the Party (PDP)."
Ashiru confirmed this development to PREMIUM TIMES on Monday, revealing that he will now align himself with the ADC, outlining a strategic change in preparation for upcoming electoral contests.
Mr. Ashiru is a well-known politician and former federal legislator who has been an influential presence in Kaduna politics for over ten years. He previously represented the PDP in the 2023 gubernatorial elections, where he was a close competitor to Uba Sani of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He contested the outcome of the election up to the Supreme Court, claiming he was the rightful winner. However, the court validated Sani's victory based on legal grounds.
His departure from the PDP highlights ongoing factional disputes that have plagued the party, where internal divisions and competing leadership structures have hindered efficient operation, leading to notable defections.
The implications of Ashiru's defection to the ADC could be impactful for the political landscape in Kaduna, as the ADC has been drawing influential figures recently, which may enhance its grassroots support with his entrance.
With Ashiru's political weight and connections, he is likely to play a crucial role in shaping the ADC's strategic direction in the state and potentially beyond.
As the political dynamics in Kaduna evolve, all eyes will be on both the PDP and APC in response to this latest shift and whether further defections will follow.
