The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have announced the initiation of "limited and targeted ground operations" in southern Lebanon as tensions rise with Hezbollah near the pivotal town of Khiam.
Recent reports from the Israeli military indicate that troops from the 91st Division have been advancing to areas close to the border over the last few days, focusing on Hezbollah installations and infrastructure. The military's objective is to enhance Israel's defensive posture and preempt further aggression from across the border.
In addition, various sources have reported that at least three airstrikes targeted Khiam on Monday, with additional Israeli strikes observed in several towns nearby, such as Yater, Burj Qalawiya, Sultaniya, Chaqra, Qantara, and as-Sawana. There have been no immediate confirmations of casualties following these airstrikes.
The military stated, "In recent days, IDF troops from the 91st division have commenced limited and targeted ground operations against key Hezbollah strongholds in southern Lebanon," emphasizing that this campaign also involves dismantling militant infrastructure and neutralizing fighters near the border.
Khiam, regarded as a Hezbollah stronghold, is situated on elevated terrain just a few kilometers from the Israeli border, near the Litani River. This location provides a strategic vantage point over northern Israel and adjacent Lebanese territories, making it a significant site in the ongoing hostilities.
This escalation occurs in the context of a broader regional turmoil triggered by the recent death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Hezbollah initiated rocket attacks towards Israel, thereby opening a new conflict front. The group had previously maintained a relative silence in its offensives against Israel since a ceasefire agreement brokered by the United States in 2024.
Military analysts suggest that the current operations by Israel are aimed at severing Hezbollah’s supply routes and restricting its capacity to transport weapons and fighters into regions south of the Litani River. Key roads around Khiam connect to vital pathways leading to eastern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley, areas where Hezbollah maintains a notable presence.
The intensifying conflict has prompted a severe humanitarian crisis, with over 800,000 individuals reportedly displaced from their homes in southern Lebanon due to Israeli military evacuation orders affecting substantial regions and parts of the capital, Beirut.
Reports indicate that Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon have resulted in casualties exceeding 850, including over 100 children and numerous women, raising concerns about the potential for an expanded conflict across the Middle East.
