An airstrike has targeted Iran’s South Pars gas field, recognized as the world's largest reserve of natural gas, intensifying tensions within the Middle East and provoking anxiety over global energy security.
Iranian state media disclosed that explosions occurred at the site following what they attribute to an Israeli strike on the extensive facility, which accounts for nearly three-quarters of the nation's gas supply. The South Pars field, which is also shared with Qatar, plays a vital role in both regional and global energy frameworks.
The government of Qatar condemned the attack, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari labeling it reckless. "The Israeli targeting of facilities associated with Iran’s South Pars field, which is an extension of Qatar’s North Field, represents a perilous and irresponsible action amid the ongoing military escalation in the region," he stated.
In response to the assault, Iran issued severe threats of retaliation, indicating that the conflict may expand to target energy infrastructures throughout the Gulf.
The Iranian military warned, "As previously indicated, should the fuel, energy, gas, and economic infrastructures of our nation come under assault from the American-Zionist adversary, in addition to a formidable reprisal against the enemy, we will accurately strike the source of that aggression. We deem any attack on the fuel, energy, and gas sectors of countries involved as legitimate and will respond decisively at the earliest opportunity."
Furthermore, the Israeli military confirmed it had executed strikes on fuel infrastructure in southern Lebanon associated with Hezbollah, the Iranian- aligned militia.
This escalation arises as Iran has issued evacuation alerts for significant oil and gas installations across the Gulf region, including sites in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar, cautioning that they could become targets "in the approaching hours."
The statement warned: “These facilities have transformed into direct and legitimate targets and will face an offensive in the forthcoming hours. Consequently, all citizens, residents, and employees are urged to leave these locales immediately and relocate to safe distances without delay."
Global energy markets demonstrated a sharp reaction, with oil prices surging by approximately five percent to $108 per barrel amid fears of potential supply disruptions, particularly through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, which facilitates around one-fifth of global oil exports.
The ongoing situation has been further complicated by reports of a projectile striking the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, Iran’s sole operational nuclear facility. The International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed the incident but reported no damage to the facility or injuries to personnel.
The agency stated, "A projectile impacted the premises of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant on Tuesday evening. There has been no damage to the plant or injuries reported among the staff." IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has called for calming actions. "A plea for restraint during the conflict to avert any threat of a nuclear disaster."
These developments occur amid increased military maneuvers involving the United States, with former President Donald Trump allegedly granting authorization for strikes on Iranian missile facilities to counteract threats to shipping routes in the region.
As tensions rise and threats spread to crucial energy and nuclear sites, analysts caution that the conflict might yield extensive consequences for global markets and regional stability.
