Iyabo Obasanjo, the daughter of ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, has expressed her intention to run for the position of Governor of Ogun State, citing public demand and a renewed commitment to serve the people.

During her recent visit to the APC National Secretariat in Abuja, she articulated her reasons for entering the race.

Mrs. Obasanjo, who previously served as a senator representing the Ogun Central district with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), indicated that her decision to join the APC is influenced by the shift of many of her political allies to the ruling party.

She stated that her re-entry into politics comes in response to repeated requests from supporters across Ogun State, who believe in her potential to lead effectively.

"As you may have read, I have officially joined the APC. As a registered member, I have declared my intention to seek nomination for the governorship candidacy from the party in Ogun State," she said.

"I have been away from active politics for several years. My return is driven by the desire of Ogun State's citizens for me to take charge again. A majority of my former colleagues, with whom I shared positive experiences, are now affiliated with the APC, which influenced my decision."

Mrs. Obasanjo aims to succeed current Ogun Governor Dapo Abiodun, an APC member whose tenure began on May 29, 2019, and who is currently serving his second and final term after winning elections in both 2019 and 2023.

She stressed the importance of education grounded in science and technology, asserting that innovation and enhancing ICT skills will better equip the youth to compete on both national and global platforms. Additionally, infrastructure development, particularly in transportation, is central to her vision, highlighting Ogun State's strategic importance as a key gateway to Nigeria. She called for better road networks and urban planning to alleviate traffic congestion and promote commerce.

Furthermore, she expressed plans to enhance agricultural and manufacturing sectors, promising to implement policies that support farmers, boost food production, and reinforce Ogun's competitive industrial standing.

In reflecting on her public service legacy, she cited her prior roles as a health commissioner and a senator, stating that these experiences render her well-suited for executive leadership. "My commitment to serving is unwavering, and I dedicate myself fully to my responsibilities," she affirmed.

On women's participation in politics, she observed a growing readiness among women to assume leadership roles, advocating that merit and proven results should govern political selections.

When questioned about the political zoning arrangement in Ogun State, particularly the potential of a micro-zoning to Ogun West, she characterized the contest as open and competitive.

"I believe my candidacy is feasible. I come with experience and an understanding of the political landscape," she stated.

While acknowledging the longstanding calls for rotational governorship via the Ogun West district, she insisted that all zones deserve an equitable chance and underscored the need for the APC to field a candidate who can garner support from all three senatorial districts.

Addressing thoughts regarding her father's influence on her political journey, Mrs. Obasanjo maintained that her choices are motivated by personal conviction and alignment with her supporters, rather than any external familial pressure.

In conclusion, she depicted the gubernatorial race as fiercely competitive but expressed confidence in her experience, grassroots backing, and development- oriented platform to position her and the APC favorably in the upcoming elections.
