False reports circulating globally that the world's oldest tortoise, Jonathan, has died have been debunked. The claim of his passing emerged after an online scam used a fake social media account impersonating his veterinarian to announce his supposed death.

The fabricated post, attributed to vet Joe Hollins, stated that Jonathan had "passed away peacefully" on the island of Saint Helena. This announcement quickly gained significant traction, reaching millions of views and being reported by numerous major news outlets.

However, the reports were later disproven when it was revealed that the social media account was a fabrication created with the intention of defrauding people through cryptocurrency donations. The actual veterinarian, Joe Hollins, stepped forward to clarify that Jonathan is very much alive and warned the public about the impersonator's fraudulent activities.

"Jonathan the tortoise is very much alive," stated Hollins, emphasizing that he does not use the social media platform where the false announcement was made. A representative from a local organisation on Saint Helena also confirmed that the ancient tortoise is "alive and well."

While Jonathan's precise age remains unknown, experts estimate his birthdate to be in the early 1830s. He was already a mature adult when he was brought to Saint Helena in 1882, indicating he was approximately 50 years old at that time.

Over his exceptionally long life, Jonathan has witnessed numerous pivotal global events, including both World Wars, and has seen technological advancements evolve from the invention of the light bulb to the era of modern computing.

He has also hosted distinguished visitors, including members of the British royal family, such as Queen Elizabeth II during her time as a princess. Despite his advanced age, Jonathan continues to reside at Plantation House on Saint Helena. Although he is blind and has lost his sense of smell, he remains active and continues to enjoy his meals.
