Umar Ascon, a well-regarded actor within the Kannywood film industry, has passed away. Ascon, who gained significant recognition for his portrayal of Alhaji Lado Mai Barkono in the popular television program Garwashi, reportedly died on Saturday, March 14, 2026. His passing occurred at the Malam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH) after a lengthy period of sickness.
The confirmation of his death came from Abubakar Yahaya Matinko, a Kannywood producer and an individual familiar with the deceased, who was also a neighbour.
Matinko noted that despite a relatively brief involvement in the film business, Ascon managed to establish a notable presence and cultivate popularity among the audience.
The late actor leaves behind his wife, who is pregnant, and their two daughters.
Prior to his career in acting, Umar Ascon was engaged in business at the Hotoro Depot in Kano.
He subsequently achieved prominence in Kannywood, particularly through his role in Garwashi, and also featured in other Hausa films such as Wata Shida and Manyan Mata.
The funeral rites, including the prayer, were observed at the Al-Masjlisul Islami Mosque, located along Hotoro Ring Road near Gade-Gade Filling Station, in adherence to Islamic customs.
