Kano Governor Promises Death Penalty for Murderers as Prosecution of Suspects Commences in Family Massacre Case

Following the horrific murder of a mother and her six children, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has pledged to uphold the death sentence for those convicted of this heinous crime, as the prosecution of the suspects begins.

Abba Yusuf, the Governor of Kano State, announced his commitment to sign death warrants for those convicted of murder in light of the brutal slaying of a woman and her six children at their residence in the Dorayi Charanchi Quarters of the state metropolis on Saturday.

During a visit on Wednesday to the grieving father, Haruna Bashir, the governor expressed his intentions.

Currently, several individuals are being prosecuted in connection with various killings in Kano.

Of particular concern are the impacts of two of the three most recent attacks on minors.

Abdulmalik Tanko, a private school teacher, is facing prosecution by the police for allegedly kidnapping and murdering his five-year-old student, Hanifa Abubakar, in January 2022.

In another case, Shafiu Abubakar, 38, is being prosecuted for allegedly igniting a fire at a mosque in the Gezawa Local Government Area that resulted in the deaths of 17 individuals in 2024.

In the aftermath of the recent tragedy in Dorayi Chiranchi, Governor Yusuf affirmed that his endorsement of capital punishment extends to the notable cases of little Hanifa Abubakar and the mosque arson incident in Gezawa.

The governor's spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, stated that the state government will fully fund Mr. Bashir’s pilgrimage for Hajj and Umrah, provide him with a new house, and offer welfare assistance.

Bature also mentioned that the state will assist Mr. Bashir in remarrying and rebuilding his life.

In a show of gratitude towards the government's support, Mr. Bashir has contributed his personal home to the Kano State Government to be converted into an Islamiyya school for the local community.

The tragic event unfolded on Saturday afternoon when attackers invaded Mr. Bashir’s home, mercilessly slaying his wife and six children.

Following the incident, the police confirmed on Sunday that they had apprehended three suspects related to the case.

Governor Yusuf has instructed the state attorney-general and commissioner for Justice to expedite the legal proceedings against the suspects involved.

He reiterated his resolve to ensure justice is achieved and affirmed his promise to sign death sentences for those found guilty of such crimes.

The governor praised the police, State Security Services (SSS), and other security agencies for their quick coordination and proactive approach in detaining the suspects.
